Volunteer

The Ruby Lake Lagoon Society is primarily a volunteer-run organization, and we rely on the generous contributions of volunteers to assist with many of our programs and activities. We are always seeking new volunteers to join the Lagoon Society team.

Lagoon Society volunteers can assist in the following areas:

  • Host the Iris Griffith Centre
  • Help out at the EarthFair Store
  • Organize events
  • Join in with Citizen Science Projects
  • Stewarding of the Tyner Biodiversity Park
  • Drive the Wood Duck Bus
  • Grow plants in the Native Plant Nursery
  • Help us organize ourselves

Become a Steward of a Local Ecosystem

The Tyner Biodiversity Park is one that we as a community are very proud of. Because of the hard work of our community members, we have been able to restore the ecological integrity of the property that the Tyner’s left behind for others to enjoy.

We are always looking for new stewards of the Tyner Biodiversity Park, which is located a short walk south of central Madeira Park. As a steward of Tyner Park you can become a part of the following:

  • Organizing volunteer restoration events with the community and local organizations or schools
  • Monitoring invasive species within the boundaries of Tyner Park, including both terrestrial and aquatic invasives
  • Planting and caring for native species
  • Maintaining trials and signs

Help Us Grow Native Plants!

At the Iris Griffith Centre we have a Native Plant Nursery where we propagate and care for a variety of native plants for use both on our nature reserve and elsewhere. Many of these plants are used in our native plant gardens in order to promote use of local plants in landscaping, to attract our native fauna, and to educate our visitors on their traditional uses. In addition, these plants are sold to help the Society raise money to continue the work we do around the Sunshine Coast.

If you have an interest in native plants, gardening, or are keen to learn more, come join us at the centre!

Help Us Organize Ourselves!

We are always seeking volunteers to help us coordinate and organize the great variety of events we host, as well as those who can help us make sure that everything goes smoothly on event day. To get an idea of what type of events the Lagoon Society hosts, here is a list of the types of events we’ve held in the past:

  • Biodiversity workshops
  • Green Building workshops
  • Community forums
  • Our annual Bioblitz
  • Local natural history events
  • Native plant propagation workshops
  • Ecological restoration events at local parks and on the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve
  • Book launches at the EarthFair Store and Iris Griffith Centre
  • Information booths at community-wide events like the Canada Day celebration in Sechelt
  • The annual Lagoon Society Christmas party, and other celebrations like our anniversary
